Talking with | Talking about, 2021
In Latvian folksongs (called dainas) the living world is often addressed in direct speech. Talking with or to creates relatedness and closeness. Yet perhaps the creators of the dainas were onto something. We speak “about” nature, “about” animals and “about” environment. Thus, creating an imagined distance. On the one hand the climate crisis reminds us about the close connection between the human behavior and the environment. And on the other – demands a question why already for decades the crisis is not being taken seriously. These are the ideas that were on my mind as I combined dainas with quotes from the local newspaper that in turn inspired bright photo collages.
