Rucka Artist Residency announces an OPEN CALL for residency spaces for Autumn 2020

Due to the global COVID-19 outbreak we decided to move our Spring residencies to Autumn. However, unfortunately, COVID-19 is still very present and possible future restrictions are unpredictable. Since some of the previously approved residents are not able to participate in the Autumn residencies, we are announcing an open call for the free residency spaces to give chance to artists, who are able to come, a place to develop their art projects here at Rucka Artist Residency. Please take in consideration that we will ask you to comply with the safety restrictions established by Latvian authorities.

Deadline for the residency application is 21 August 2020.

Description of artist residency programme

The aim of the residency programme is to bring together artists from different spheres (film and photography, multimedia, dance, theater, design, drawing, etc.) to create artworks that address important social and environmental issues and involve members of the local community in the development of artwork. 

When evaluating the residency applications for the Autumn 2020 the preference will be given to projects addressing ecology, sustainable economy, zero waste lifestyle, ecological farming, smart cities. 

Expectations towards the artist

Rucka Artist Residency is looking forward to applications clearly outlining the project artist is planning to work on during the residency period and the result that will be achieved. 

At the end of the residency period, artists are expected to share the results of the work created with the local community in the form of artist talk, screening, exhibition, other performance or to run a workshop. 

Disciplines supported 

Rucka Artist Residency programme is open to arts professionals from  a wide range of disciplines, including but not limited to film, photography, multimedia, dance, theater, design.

Duration of residency  Residency lasts for 1 (one) month. Residents should plan their stay at Rucka between 12 September and 18 October 2020.

Accommodation

Artists live in private bedrooms with shared bathroom. A fully-equipped kitchen and dining area is also available to the residents on a self-serve basis.

Workspace/technical information

The residents have access to analogue photography laboratory, shared open space studios, workshop space for creating large scale artworks and library. Wi-Fi is available in the whole building. 

Fees and support

The residency programme covers accommodation and shared open studio space costs for one month. In addition to that, each artist will receive a production grant up to 200 EUR to be spent on materials, rent of equipment and other costs required to create the artwork.  Applicants are responsible for covering their travel and food expenses. Rucka Artist Residency will issue acceptance letter for successful residents in order to help them to obtain grants to cover  travel, insurance, food costs etc.

Selection process

The evaluation criteria include the importance of the topic proposed and its relevance to the aims of residency programme and Rucka Artist Residency, previous experience and artistic merit of the applicant, and interest/ability of the applicant to involve local community in development of his/her work.

COVID-19 precautions we must take into consideration

The general rule is – if the cumulative number of infected per 100,000 inhabitants is less than 16 then the country is considered safe and there are no special rules for people entering Latvia. Visitors entering Latvia from the countries where infection level is above this threshold are subject to 14-day self-isolation.
The list of countries can be viewed on the website of the Latvian Center for Disease Prevention and Control (https://www.spkc.gov.lv/lv/valstu-saslimstibas-raditaji-ar-covid-19-0) If the country is marked in red or yellow, any person who is coming or has transited particular country within last 14 days must self-isolate for a period of 14 days regardless of negative COVID-19 test. Self-isolation must be maintained at the place of a person’s residence or another place of stay. Please note that we are unable to provide self-isolation services at Rucka Artist Residency not to expose other residents and staff members to the risk of being infected.
